I'm starting a new topic about core tenets, which was asked about elsewhere.
Obviously, a big one is that we enjoy meeting in person.
Ideally, people who show up have an interest in open source. They don't have to be developers but in practice a lot of us write at least some code.
We try to be accepting of everyone. We're aware that (like open source in general) we attract more men than women. We're talking about how we can improve this situation over at #boston > gender imbalance.
Core Tenet Draft List:
Maintain a group that is fully inclusive with an emphasis on extending welcoming to traditionally underrepresented groups of people in development space.
“small but mighty” - Maintain focus on incremental success. Identify areas where the group expertise aligns with meaningful projects that are small, but have high potential to yield high impact - contributing to the greater good
Well, sure, but now we're back to picking a project. This topic: #boston > Boston Open Dev Project
That is to say, I don't think it's a core tenet to work on a piece of software together. But we certainly could!
The meetup is modeled off of a similar meetup at Grendel's in Harvard Square. Some open source people would get together late on a Sunday night, at 8 or 9pm or so. I went a couple times but it was too late for me. So my idea was to have a meetup at 5pm or so close to home (for me). That way, people who just couldn't get enough open source could cross the river for the next meetup at Grendel's.
Both meetups are super casual. No talks. Just show up. Pay for your own food or drink. Socialize. Have fun.
Ahh I see ok makes sense

"Dev" in the name will probably give the impression that it's targeting developers

@Dan I can see that as a new person. Granted I missed the second half of the meet up, but when I looked at this thread #boston > Boston Open Dev Project as a "newbie" it was a little unclear whether this was a casual group "hang out and talk shop" OR if there was more of a project component to it. Either way i'm in I really enjoyed hanging!
Mostly talk shop so far.
