Apparently the big US OSM convention this year is June 19-21 in Boston!

I was in the OSM Slack to ask a question related to the bike stress map and thankfully noticed.

Wow it's not cheap

It looks like I could get an academic discount but I'll be in Seattle then. Oh well. Maybe next time!

I paid the $50 to attend Thursday at the Foundry. I bet I'll meet some cool people! Friday and Saturday are $175 each, though I think $280 gets you the whole conference.

Nice. I should ask if anyone from gis.harvard.edu is going.

So I spent $50 on Thursday for "workshops". But they're offering General Admission for $100 (instead of $280) for volunteers, so I signed up and will be able to upgrade. So I guess I'm all-in!

Man, BU is gonna be SUPER well mapped after this month :-D

Figured it's worth it for the networking if nothing else.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Jun 06 2025 at 21:39):

Nice about the upgrade. Why BU, specifically? Oh, it's at BU.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Jun 06 2025 at 21:40):

Friday and Saturday at least. Thursday is at the Foundry.

BCU Labs will be on a panel: https://whova.com/embedded/session/hDeQXpxoDgWux-bVAy3MI1xD65j3yq9pnQuXjZnYCNA%3D/4651281/?widget=primary

(They created the stress map: #boston > Bike Stress Map )

Cool. I'll have to check if I chose to volunteer during that time. I had to make some difficult decisions on that.

One guy here works for a rural fire department that relies on OSM. Particularly since everything is inconsistent and/or informal. It's much better than Google Maps. I think he added a bunch of data himself based on public sources.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Jun 19 2025 at 23:02):

"I got a fire on Grandma's Road" which only the locals refer to that way. And I guess there's a tag for "local name".

Another cool thing was a county in IL that uses OSM as their authoritative data source. They review all the edits and only had two cases of vandalism so far, one of which was fixed by someone else before they had a chance.

I'm getting to know the OSM US people. Maybe I should ask them about moving to Zulip. They're on Slack now for whatever reason.

Guess which building 100s of mappers have been hanging out at for the last couple days

Something weird about the tile generation and caching here. I'm not always getting all of the changes people made.

The one with all the picnic tables marked around it?
