As I mentioned at the meetup, I'll be hosting a watch party at my place in Dover, New Hampshire for the Chaos Communication Congress, an infamous hacker conference in Germany, from Dec 27-30:
https://danielkrol.sandcats.io/shared/ZaBIHbOqIi2WomT7s8qU4gq2vqnURA5sWQ_FwslwSU7
I know it's a bit out of the way but I thought I'd invite y'all in case it sounds interesting. I intend to have the thing on the whole time and welcome people to visit whenever, but the "suggested day" will be Friday the 29th (30th always ends early).
Just check out the link for details (hosted on my Sandstorm, BTW!) For info about what CCC is, and logistics. Please LMK if you're a yes or a maybe, and I'll ping you closer to the event.
I plan to coordinate via Signal but I could maybe give updates in this room for those not on Signal.
Oh I should note that I live 5-10 min walk to the Dover Downeaster Amtrak.
Looks like the recordings are up: https://media.ccc.de/c/37c3/
They come up within a day or two, it's pretty amazing.
The Kaspersky one is pretty epic. It's called Triangulation.
Hello hackers, today thru Monday is Chaos Communication Congress in Germany! I did not opt for a watch party this year. But I wanted to point you to it anyway.
You can see links to find the schedule here (just remember it's in Germany time. Get up early!):
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2024/hub/en/wiki/fahrplan/
You can watch live here (on their diy infra): https://media.ccc.de/
Last year I was sometimes able to watch live on my phone with NewPipe but I only see recent recordings right now. But I'm assuming the Kodi plugin still works, to watch on the big screen!
I've been there only once but CCC is great, impressive organization, huge mix of hackers, human rights activists and counterculture, it feels kind of unique!
Which makes me think it's actually something I miss from Europe, this mix of hacking and counter culture. I used to go in a hackerspace in Paris, but couldn't find anything similar in the Boston area :crying_cat:
Really? Surely one exists. Not like CBase I'm sure. But if you're ever in San Francisco check out Noisebridge to be sure.
That one is pretty wild.
That's so cool that you've been there! You'll have to tell us about it.
@Andrea what about HOPE ( https://hope.net )? It's not it Boston but you could take a bus to NYC.

I heard about HOPE but I've never been, possibly the closest thing to CCC in the area. Have you been?

I've never been but I heard a lot about Noisebridge, I wish there was something similar around here too! :crying_cat:
No, I haven't been to HOPE.
I'll consider it this year. I'll have to think about leaving my phone at home and get a Faraday cage for my wallet...
Event is in August, tickets go on sale this Thursday
Probably won't buy but it depends what the price is!
Doesn't say.
If I have to ask, I can't afford it!
Lol $225 hope more like nope amirite
At least for my unemployed self
Actually that's probably not that expensive assuming it's a good conference, it's just not for me at the moment.
I mean, JavaOne used to cost over $2K before inflation, years ago.

Same... :losing_money:
Obviously it's not the same as in person but apparently they also have virtual tickets: https://bsky.app/profile/2600.com/post/3lfuunqsi3s2t

Maybe this could be close if they're still active: https://www.cambridgehackspace.com/, does anyone know this place?
I've met people at the Libre Boston meetups (#boston > Libre Boston) who go there but I've never been myself.
Should we plan a field trip?
Also, I finally made it the Paris for the first time a few weeks ago but I forgot about this conversation about a hackerspace. Oh well. We were too busy seeing the main touristy things.

Definitely! :raised_hands:
I went to some hackerspace or other after Code and Coffee. Just to poke my head inside. It was pretty big and corporate feeling. So maybe not the same place.
If you like tech counter culture you may want to check out Libre Boston. They're more political. For instance the Internet In A Box guy is one of the common attendees.
Speaking of hacker spaces, I just kicked off this thread: #boston > Artisans Asylum

At CIC in Cambridge? I heard this is more like startups & VC oriented
Yeah Code and Coffee is overall not the punk rock hacker scene of course, but one guy was a little eccentric and took a few of us to a couple places after, including this hacker space (or maybe it was a coworking space, or something in between?) and then this art party at a bar after (which I bailed from right away).

Oh right I think it's indeed a co-working space
Okay, I'm pretty sure the place I went was The Foundry.

And the Thursday date of the OSM State Of The Map will be there. I'll probably go for that day (it's cheaper!)
So I've been convinced to likely attend HOPE this year with some of the Libre Boston types. Any other interested parties? @Andrea This is probably the type of people you're looking for.
They're looking at a carpool and other scrappy (less posh) ways to save money. LMK if you want to know more about those options.
(I just realized that this is the same HOPE that I had considered before. I thought it was last year that we brought this up.)
(So, time doesn't fly quite so fast)

Unfortunately I'll be out of the country most of August
Europeans
I'm jealous!
Can we ask for a topic name change? "Hacker Events" or something. I feel like HOPE and CCC and hackerspaces bleed into each other so maybe we don't need multiple topics.
GameTank - I think this is an 8 bit game system made from simple logic chips, not like an Arduino or anything. Game system and controllers are 3D printed. You can feel the nice 3d printed grooves as you hold the controllers.
No there's a CPU chip. I don't know what limits the guy placed on himself but he didn't want to use modern small chips. The whole device was filled with bulky ICs.
A presentation about breaking Enigma in WWII.
HOPE had various cool things. I won't flood the channel I just wanted to post a couple. I spent most of my time repping the Internet In A Box table. Met a lot of cool people including some from Chicago who I hadn't seen in about 15 years.
Sure, we can ask Gabor Szabo once we've decided how to combine topics.
Oh wait I can rename it myself :man_facepalming: I was on my phone client before.
Oh, no I can't. I get an error. I'd want to change it to "Hacker Culture (CCC, HOPE, hackerspaces)"
Just this one topic?
Yeah if you think it makes sense
Sure, @Gabor Szabo do you mind moving this entire topic to one called "Hacker Culture (CCC, HOPE, hackerspaces)"?
@Dan done!
