I had a random thought. I was listening to a podcast about how we expect free software and Internet services to be free of charge. And we're "spoiled".
Except I don't think we're just spoiled. I think it's just habitual. It feels weird to go out of our way to pay for free software. (Especially since there's so many to choose from, etc)
Random idea came to mind - what if we had regular social fundraiser events, and the money just went to software we all like. Maybe choose something everyone forgets about and takes for granted? Chipping in at a fundraiser is something we're used to doing. Especially if it's in the form of buying a ticket, and the ticket price is inflated to cover the donation.
Curious how that lands with people
Overall, it sounds fine, I guess.
The main type of social fundraiser event I hear about it gala dinners, which I don't usually attend. Too expensive. And I feel like some people go just to be seen.
What did you have in mind when you talk about social fundraiser events?
Winrar is the first thing that came to mind. In all seriousness, I think it's a good idea
I was thinking more casual and regular. Like maybe normal tech meetups. Though you wouldn't want to charge an entrance fee.
But how do you raise funds without changing an entrance fee? Have a raffle? A bake sale? :cupcake:
Yeah I dunno. This is a half baked idea. I pulled over to park my car to write it out before I forgot it
But I'm trying to think of ways it can be moved into everyday life. Ideally we would be paying for the software we use in everyday life, but that's difficult.
Well, maybe our taxes could pay for it. I dunno.
It was habitual for a while to expect free news online. However, these days you find more paywalls on newspapers' websites.
