Finally released my project.
I submitted it to HN and it's on the front page but rather modestly so far.
Well it's hung in there for a good part of the day. Still basically no feedback about the app itself! Even someone telling me something is broken would be nice. At least I got a correction on the blog post which I fixed.
I mentioned it to a GIS guy at work during our holiday party.
Wow, this is quite an extensive writeup!
Anyone who's having trouble with the demo link LMK I'll make you a demo instance on my own server.
There's been issues. We're not sure what's up.
That's pretty cool
Need help packaging/porting?
I ask because your critique of Headway was about its overheads in deployment.
I mean Headway is probably very easy as far as OSM goes. Desert Atlas is just easier, though much more stripped down for features and quality.
What did you want to help with porting? I'm not following.
To run Sandstorm, you need a 64-bit Linux server connected to the Internet. (Requirements: Linux 3.10 or newer running on x86-64. 1GB+ of RAM; 2GB+ recommended.)
That's not very ported! - You don't need to go crazy and support: Windows, macOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, SunOS, iOS, and Android…
…but you could!
I see. Well I had no hand in creating Sandstorm the platform. I've just created applications.
I am however part of the community project. In somewhat of a leadership position at this point.
And I can tell you that as far as the existing platform, there is a need to keep it alive because of existing users. Beyond that there's a project to reboot it as Tempest. That is being written in Go, so it will be quite portable.
The existing platform is C++, Meteor JS, and MongoDB. It's about the worst combination of factors for new contributors in 2024.
With all that in mind, if you're interested in helping in any of this stuff we'd be grateful to have you.
The people who wrote the original platform have moved on.
Talking about this at Harvard GIS https://gis.harvard.edu/event/desert-atlas-self-hosted-collaborative-online-map-easy-and-private (thanks to Philip for the introduction!)
Sure!
Oh good, K262. One floor below my office.
And I seem to be free. See you there!
Oh and if anyone wants to join remotely, there's a Zoom option in the link above.
Today's the day! See you there! Here's the link to join the Zoom: https://harvard.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYud-mrqzIrEt1PyM0dK05hsRuxV4m4EYtn
I'm in the science center adding something to a slide
Benjamin gave me his phone number and said he wanted to meet at 11:30. I haven't heard from him and he's not responding.
I told him I won't have email.
I guess I'm pulling out my laptop anyway.
Okay it's sorted out.
Great talk, Dan!
Thank you!
