I can't believe we're planning our first meetup of 2025!
@Sooraj Sathyanarayanan suggested a new venue. Mamacita, near Northeastern. See #boston > Mamacita
Assuming we go with Mamacita, should we still meet at 5pm? Any opinions? I assume we'd still meet on a Sunday. (My Sundays in January are free.)
@Sooraj Sathyanarayanan maybe you can tell us which Sunday and what time works for you. I'll probably give it at
I don't have a clear view about Jan just yet - you folks can decide what works for you, I am flexible (apart from my interviews and stuff)
I mean, I'm a creature of habit so I'm fine with just putting out a few Sundays for people to vote on for Hamilton yet again. Probably 5pm, like usual. Winter hours. It's dark anyway!
same time, new venue? and poll for which Sunday?
Sure, that's fine. Usually I do a message for each option and ask people to  Want me to do that?
ok I can post in our Signal group?
I mean, usually I ask people to vote here.

sure anything is fine
Ok! The plan is to MIX UP THE VENUE in January! New year, new venue! We'll meet at Mamacita instead of Hamilton. We'll meet at 5pm, as usual, and on a Sunday, as usual. Please give a  for all the options below that work for you. Vote for as many as you like!
Sunday, Jan 5
Sunday, Jan 12
Sunday, Jan 19
Sunday, Jan 26
It looks like we have a winner! :trophy:
Sunday, January 12 at 5pm at Mamacita! :burrito: :taco: For the first time, we'll be meeting in Boston! :mind_blown:
I updated the website. See you there!
Hi folks, after moving to California and going MIA from here, I’ll be back in Boston from 1st to 4th, and I’d love to meet some folks evening of 2nd or 3rd for a quick snack at Flour Bakery, 190 Mass Ave. Nothing formal, just text me if free! Sorry I won’t make it to the Jan 12 meetup. :(
@Philip Durbin thanks for the invite, I'd love to attend
@Dave Hanft so nice to see you here!
@August Radjoe welcome back, however briefly! If you don't get any takers on the evening of the 3rd, you could attend the Libre Boston meetup in Harvard Square: #boston > Libre Boston
Who wants to watch a TETRIS tournament at MIT before the meeting?

It doesn't say here but it ends around 5PM. So we'd have to miss the final round. Which I'm okay with.

Looks Interesting, reminded me of this
https://hacks.mit.edu/by_year/2012/tetris/
Hah. Well this isn't an MIT-specific thing really. It's a Tetris community thing. The Zoomers figured out a new way to play and they blow us Millenials and Xers out of the water. The guy putting it on is among the best in the world but he'll probably be too tired to play at peak performance.
So they must have had colored LEDs set up in each window.
Yes! Here is the repo https://github.com/mitrisdev/d54.git
so cool
I wonder why the Space Invaders PR wasn't accepted.
In one week we'll be giving Mamacita a try! I've never been there but from pics it looks like we'll just seat ourselves after ordering food at the counter so it's probably less important to get a head count, but please give a  if you plan to be there (Sunday, Jan 12 at 5pm) so we know to look for you. Maps etc. are at https://bostonopen.dev

No worries! Thanks for invite. Looking forward to it!
Me too. See you all at Mamacita at 5!
@Dan wow, the Tetris is fast! https://mastodon.social/@ill_logic/113816645992538891
It goes a little faster too.
These zoomers are crazy.
Oh wait I take that back, this is basically the same as the max speed of most matches.
@Dan wow! What do you know about the underlying strategy? I have to assume there is one at those speeds
They train on general technique for stacking pieces, so there isn't much question where they want to place them. It's like a reflex. The question is being able to move the pieces fast enough. And to that end they invented a new technique called "rolling" where they hold one finger over a button and tap the back of the controller with their other hand.
The most impressive thing is not just the speed but the way they sometimes save themselves against all odds when they look like they're about to lose.
They're able to stack up pieces such that they get the 4 lines in a row with the long bar (a "Tetris") which gives you more points per line. And being able to stack so cleanly is something I don't know how to do, I had no idea it was possible until I saw pros play. Not perfect but very clean.
I mean to be clear I can get tetrises sometimes, just not all the time like these folks.
/me starts walking to Mamacita
/me ETA 4:50 plus parking time
