How does Sunday October 27th at 6pm sound? Please give a  if that might work for you.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Sep 24 2024 at 23:17):

I'd prefer not to do Oct 19-20 because I'll be a single parent that weekend. And the the weekend before, Oct 12-13, is a three day weekend so my family and I might travel.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Sep 24 2024 at 23:35):

Please feel free to suggest other days and times, of course. If I can't make it, I'll catch you folks in November. :grinning:

Please vote on Oct 27 or suggest other times. I'd like to update https://bostonopen.dev soon. Thanks. @Andrea @Autolux @August Radjoe @Dan @Ista Zahn @Jason Key @Jose Lucas Cordeiro @Milan Kupcevic @Pete @Sai Dutt @Stone Chen @Yamil Suarez

Hello. I am a young person interested in coming to your next meetup. My name is Zachary Liebl and I showed up at one of your meetings the night after LibrePlanet. For this upcoming meeting, I will invite maybe 5-6 of my friends who are also interested in FOSS. I can't make it on the 27, can we do the 26 or the 25? I prefer the 25 but I can make it either day. Respond with :+1: for the 25 and  for the 26. Or I guess respond to Philip's comment if you want the 27.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 09 2024 at 19:04):

Sorry @Philip Durbin I'm just trying to sort out my month's plans. Will try to answer today.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 09 2024 at 19:05):

@Zachary Liebl That's awesome that you have so many interested friends! The thing is we have thus far always met on a Sunday. Is Sunday generally a bad day for you?

view this post on Zulip Zachary Liebl (Oct 09 2024 at 20:45):

@Dan Sunday is a great day for me normally. It is just that Sunday the 27 I will be out of state. I could do Sunday the 20 if that works for everyone.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 02:16):

@Zachary Liebl I do remember a bunch of people coming after LibrePlanet. I'm glad you're coming, with friends!

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 02:17):

I see @Dan gave a  to the 27th so it's awfully tempting to just declare that date as the winner. And like Dan said, we've always done Sunday nights, so far.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 02:18):

As I mentioned above, Sunday the 20th is tricky for me because my wife is traveling and I might need to help our daughter with homework or whatever.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 02:20):

@Dan and @Andrea how do you feel about the 20th? Again, I might not be there but that's ok, if the rest of you all want to meet then.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 10 2024 at 02:57):

27th or 20th work for me

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 10:22):

Well, that's enough for me to say the 20th is fine. @Dan do you have a preference for a time? 6pm?

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 10 2024 at 16:51):

6 or later is fine. I might add that one person on Signal can do 27 but not 20.

view this post on Zulip Zachary Liebl (Oct 10 2024 at 21:39):

Then maybe the 27 is best. I will just not be there. But I will be at LibreBoston on the 18th . Libreboston and these Open Dev meetups are largely the same thing so maybe it does not make sense to schedule them 2 days apart. Maybe we can get some cross-pollination of people to both events?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:01):

@Zachary Liebl yes! Libre Boston is back! I posted about it here: #boston > Libre Boston

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:02):

Some cross-pollination would be great. I do recognize some of the members from LibrePlanet.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:02):

Anyway, it sounds like we're fairly settled on the 27th.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:03):

@Zachary Liebl you can send your friends our way even if you can't make it!

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:07):

Ok, I updated the website.

There's also Grendel's. The meetup at Hamilton is designed to be early enough that you can go to both. But I should check with Martin to see if they're still happening.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 10 2024 at 23:26):

Martin says meetings at Grendel's are still happening every so often.

Please give a  if you think you might make it so we know how big of a table to get.

If we don't see you, have a good weekend!

"Telecommunications firms have a legal obligation to allow federal authorities to have access to electronic information if there is a court order for the eavesdropping. If China penetrated the wiretapping system, it would be a serious security breach."

Let's talk about when to meet in November over at #boston > 2024-11 meetup

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 31 2024 at 23:07):

I wish I actually understood the guix trust thing. At the end of the day unless you're starting on an OS that you manually poked into existence by toggling switches, you can't build the OS. The kernel you're running could itself be suspect.

view this post on Zulip Dan (Oct 31 2024 at 23:08):

To say nothing of the hardware, let's pretend there's no issue there.

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Oct 31 2024 at 23:14):

I mean, https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2023/the-full-source-bootstrap-building-from-source-all-the-way-down/ does look like they're starting off at quite a low level. Plenty low for me, I'd say. :grinning:

view this post on Zulip Dan (Nov 01 2024 at 15:51):

Well sure. But at that point why not just trust the compiler?

view this post on Zulip Dan (Nov 01 2024 at 15:51):

Like why would you trust the kernel more than the compiler?

view this post on Zulip Philip Durbin (Nov 02 2024 at 03:12):

Hmm, I dunno. I'm probably too trusting. :grinning:
